Plus special guest Aziz (Stone Roses / Ian Brown) Islington Academy Ticketweb £15.50 adv unreserved standing ReviewThe Durutti Column returned to the Islington Academy on the back of the recent triumphant show in Belgium. Vini was on good form having made two live radio appearances during the week, one, Gideon Coe's BBC 6Music on the very same day. During the soundcheck the band experimented with one of the new tracks Vini had been playing solo on the radio. However, it was the solo acoustic version that made its way into the show as the first encore (listed as "Acoustic Rache" on the official setlist). The very lively audience of 204 paying punters had previously been warmed up by an excellent Aziz with his tabla player ("the best tabla player in my price range"). The Durutti Column came on stage at just after the scheduled time 9.15pm. Vini thanked everyone for coming, telling them that it was amazing. He then introduced the band: Keir Stewart on bass, samples, harmonica ("the best producer I have worked with") and Bruce Mitchell on drums ("The only drummer who can play this music"). Then a wag in audience shouted out "And you are?" and Vini replied "Johnny Marr"! The major part of the setlist was familiar from recent shows with now regular opener 'Sketch for Summer' followed by Otis. However, normal third up 'Jacqueline' was bumped down to six by Vini's solo piece and 'Somebody's Party'. The harmonica driven 'Salford Rache' (aka 'Untitled for You') led into set-closers 'The Missing Boy', 'The Beggar' and 'Requiem for Mother'. Vini returned solo to play the aforementioned "Acoustic Rache" before the whole band reconvened for 'Revolver' (with a slight twist in the intro as Keir variously speeded up and slowed down the Peter Finch sample from Network. SetlistSketch For Summer - - Many thanks to The Durutti Column and Phil Jones. Coming eventually, exclusive to Cerysmatic Factory: exclusive behind the scenes and on-stage documentary video of this gig. |
